How Life Experiences Shaped My Teaching Journey at Runshaw College

Stuart Hide has been a valued member of our teaching community at Runshaw College since 2019. As the T Level Course Leader for Design, Surveying, and Planning within our School of Engineering, he brings a wealth of expertise, enthusiasm, and real-world insight to both the classroom and wider college community.

With a background in both professional practice and military service, Stuart is deeply committed to inspiring the next generation of engineers. His dedication helps students develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to seize new opportunities and thrive in their future careers. In addition to his teaching role, he also serves as a staff governor, further contributing to the college’s growth and success.

What inspired you to transition into teaching?

After leaving the military, where I received training in various areas of military engineering, I found myself reflecting on my own education journey. I’ll admit, I was once a college dropout – I didn’t find college engaging, and I felt the need to break away. But after experiencing life, serving my country, and learning so much along the way, I realised that I wanted to give back. I felt that with the skills and experiences I had gained, I could help shape and inspire the next generation of young talent.

Stuart was awarded the prestigious Excellence Award during our 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2024, presented by the alumni of Runshaw College, John Thomson.

What do you believe are the greatest benefits of teaching?

The most rewarding aspect of teaching is being able to engage with and develop young people, helping them realise their full potential and equipping them for incredible careers. Watching students grow, learn, and go on to do amazing things in their chosen fields is incredibly fulfilling. It’s not just about imparting knowledge – it’s about inspiring them to thrive and succeed in their future careers.

What would you say to someone considering applying to work at Runshaw College?

What I love most about my role is the camaraderie and teamwork across departments. There’s a real sense of collaboration, where everyone is dedicated not just to teaching but to mentoring and nurturing students. It’s an environment where we all work together to help students reach their full potential. This supportive and dynamic community, combined with the top-tier resources, makes Runshaw College an exceptional place to be, where students’ dreams can take flight.

What skills have you brought from industry to your role as a teacher?

I bring a diverse set of skills from my experiences in architecture, civil engineering, military engineering, and life in general. These experiences allow me to provide students with a unique, real-world perspective that enriches their learning. Whether it’s technical knowledge or life lessons, I aim to equip students with the tools they need to excel in their careers.
