Since joining us in January 2024, Claire has made an incredible impact on both our learners and her wider team. With over 12 years of experience in the Further Education sector, as well as a background in the pharmaceutical industry and secondary schools, she brings a wealth of real-world knowledge and a passion for education.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you joined Runshaw?
I joined Runshaw in January 2024 as Head of School for Science, and I haven’t looked back! My journey into Further Education started over 12 years ago after working in the pharmaceutical industry and teaching in secondary schools. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to teach a variety of subjects, including Biology, Chemistry, and Health & Social Care. What drew me to Runshaw was its outstanding reputation, student-centred approach, and commitment to staff development.
What has been your most memorable experience at Runshaw so far?
One of the standout moments of my time at Runshaw has been Science Futures Week. Last June, we had the privilege of hosting leading employers such as AstraZeneca, Cavendish Nuclear, NHS Hospital Pharmacy, BAE Systems, and many others, who engaged with our A Level and BTEC Science students. It was an inspiring experience that encouraged our students to explore career paths in high-demand sectors. Building on its success, we were thrilled to host another event in March, which turned out to be a resounding success. Over 20 incredible science events took place throughout the week, offering students the chance to meet industry experts and delve into fascinating topics such as health, conservation, genetics, AI, soil science, and more. I’m truly excited to collaborate with colleagues across the college to make this event happen and continue opening doors for our students, helping them pursue their ambitions. We can’t wait to do it again!
How has Runshaw supported your career growth and professional development?
Runshaw has been instrumental in my professional development. The college offers an extensive and flexible CPD programme tailored to individual needs, ensuring that we’re always growing in our roles. One of the most valuable aspects of my development has been working with my mentor, Vanessa Harwood, our Assistant Principal for A Levels. Her guidance and expertise have been invaluable in shaping my leadership skills and confidence in my role.
What is the work environment like at Runshaw?
I am proud to be part of a fantastic team of expert Science teachers who are passionate about inspiring and supporting our students. The management team is incredibly supportive and actively works to reduce teacher workload. Some initiatives that colleagues truly appreciate include:

What do you enjoy most about working at Runshaw College?
The students here are fantastic, and my colleagues create a positive, supportive environment where everyone wants to succeed together. Runshaw is well-resourced, and we receive excellent support from all departments, allowing us to focus on delivering outstanding teaching and learning. It’s a place where you truly feel valued.
