A Level Programme Entry Minimum Requirements (2025/2026)

Overall requirements for the A Level Programme at Runshaw College requires a minimum of 5 GCSE subjects at Grade 5, in 5 separate national curriculum subjects. It is expected that most students will study 3 subjects – the option of doing 4 subjects for students who have an average GCSE grade profile of 7 or above will be considered on an individual basis. Please note – Short course GCSEs only count as half a GCSE. All students will need to re-sit GCSE Maths/English if they don’t have a Grade 4 or higher.

Accounting Grade 5 English (Language or Literature) | Grade 5 Maths  /
Biology Grade 5 Maths | Grade 6 in Combined Science OR Grade 6 in Biology

Students considering Oxbridge for science should consider Further Maths. If students have Grade 77 in Combined Science OR Grade 7 in Biology, but only Grade 5 in Maths, please direct to Head of School – Vicky Kilshaw, Jenna Burrow or Yvette Lister- Roberts for discussion.

Business Studies Grade 5 in a written subject* | Grade 5 Maths  /
Chemistry Grade 6 Maths | Grade 66 in Combined Science OR Grade 6 in Chemistry | PLEASE NOTE – students enrolling to Chemistry must also take another science (Biology, Physics, Geology, Maths or Engineering)

Students considering Oxbridge for science should consider Further Maths. If students have Grade 7 7 in Combined Science OR Grade 7 in Chemistry, but only Grade 5 in Maths, please direct to Head of School for discussion.

Classical Civilisation Grade 5 English (Language or Literature)  /
Computer Science Grade 5 Maths (If Compute Science not taken, see Head of School)

Computer Science at many prestigious universities requires A Level Maths. A limited number of these may be accessible with Grade 6 GCSE Maths instead.

Criminology Grade 5 in written subject*

Criminology is a Level 3 Applied Diploma (rather than an A level), but students are awarded A level style grades A*-E.

Drama & Theatre Studies Grade 5 English (Language or Literature)  /
Economics Grade 5 English (Language or Literature) | Grade 5 Maths

If thinking of doing economics at university it is advisable to take A Level Maths but not always essential. Take Further Maths if considering applying for a pure economics degree at prestigious universities. Essay based subjects are also useful.

Engineering Grade 6 Maths | Grade 55 in Combined Science OR Grade 5 in a Separate Science

Students wishing to progress to degree courses in Engineering should also be studying Physics and Maths.

English Combined Grades 5 + 6 in English Language and English Literature (either way around – if English Literature not taken, see Head of School for English)

Any student with only one English GCSE must see Head of School – Francesca Grilli.

This is a one-year course, so must be in addition to 3 or 4 subjects.

Film Studies Grade 5 English Language  /

French Grade 5 English Language | Grade 6 French  /
Geography Grade 5 English (Language or Literature) | Grade 5 Maths OR Grade 5 Geography  /
Geology Grade 5 Maths | Grade 66 in Combined Science OR Grade 6 in Geology

Geology/Earth Science at the most prestigious Universities requires Maths AND Chemistry OR Physics. If students have Grade 77 in Combined Science OR Grade 7 in Chemistry or Biology or Physics, but only Grade 5 in Maths, please direct to Head of School.

Graphics Grade 5 Art & Design OR Grade 5 Graphic Products OR task set by the college

History EM    History M Grade 5 History (if taken), Grade 5 in English (Language or Literature) – if no History GCSE Grade 5 in English (Language or Literature and Grade 5 in another written subject*

History students have 2 courses to choose from. Please check every student knows which one they have opted for.

Law Grade 5 English (Language or Literature)

A Level Law is accepted at Prestigious Universities and Oxbridge. Also very welcome for History, Maths and English Literature.

Maths Grade 6 Maths (Higher Paper)  /
Maths (Core) Grade 5 Maths

Core Maths is a level 3 qualification, equivalent to an AS level, only in Year 1. It is well recognised by universities. It’s essentially maths without the algebra, and the content supports a range of other subjects. Please recommend Core Maths to any students taking Biology, Geology, Geography, Business, Psychology… and NOT taking A Level maths. This is a one-year course, so must be in addition to 3 or 4 subjects.

Maths (Further) Grade 8 Maths

Please send students to Head of School – Louisa Singleton or Mike Moss to discuss. Students to enrol on to 4 subjects initial, Maths + Further Maths & 2 other subjects.

Media Studies Grade 5 English (Language or Literature)  /
Medical Society Grade 6 Maths | Grade 6 English Language | Grade 77 Science OR Grade 7 Biology AND Grade 7 Chemistry

Please send students to Jane Wells, Fran Ashton or Jenna Burrow to discuss. It is highly recommended that students wishing to study Medicine, Dentistry or Vet Science at university take A level Chemistry and Biology.

Music Grade 5 in Music OR ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory AND successful practical audition

Music Technology Grade 5 in GCSE Music OR Grade 3 in ABRSM Music Theory OR successful audition (see Head of School)

Entry requirements include “successful audition”. Please send students to Head of School – Martin Gaskell to check whether this has been achieved if they don’t have the qualifications.

Photography Grade 5 Art & Design / Photography OR task set by the college

Physical Education Grade 5 in PE (if taken) | Grade 55 in Combined Science OR Grade 5 in Biology

Cambridge National at Merit or above is acceptable as an alternative to 5 in GCSE PE.

Preferably, students should be performing to at least school and/or ‘club’ level in a minimum of one sport.

Physics Grade 6 Maths | Grade 66 in Combined Science OR Grade 6 in Physics | PLEASE NOTE – students enrolling to Physics must also take Maths

If taking Physics should take Maths as A level Physics is a very mathematical subject. Students considering OXBRIDGE for science should consider Further Maths.
