From Apprentice to IT Pro: My Growth and Journey at Runshaw College
Rhiannon’s journey at Runshaw College began in 2023 as an apprentice in the IT Services team, working alongside skilled professionals to maintain the college’s technology infrastructure and cybersecurity. With over 5,000 students and 650 staff members relying on their expertise, every day presents new challenges and opportunities to grow. Now a permanent member of the team, Rhiannon’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, learning, and the supportive environment we aim to create for both staff and students at Runshaw.

Can you tell us about your journey to joining Runshaw College?
Before joining Runshaw, I was working as a Learning Technologist, creating online materials for various courses. During this time, I discovered my passion for education and realized that I truly enjoyed helping others learn. While I loved my role, I wanted to take on a more technical position – one where I could directly solve system issues and see the impact of my work more clearly. That’s when I found my perfect fit at Runshaw.
What has been one of the most memorable experiences at Runshaw so far?
A standout moment for me was being nominated for a Staff Excellence Award during my first year here. Being recognized for my contributions made me feel incredibly valued. It showed me that I was having a positive impact not only on the college but also on my colleagues. It was a huge confidence boost and reaffirmed that I made the right decision to join Runshaw.
How has Runshaw supported your career growth and professional development?
I started at Runshaw as an apprentice, with no guarantee of a permanent position after completing my program. However, I’m proud to say that I’ve been a permanent member of staff since July. The opportunity to grow within the college has been incredibly rewarding. From my apprenticeship to securing a full-time role, I’ve learned so much, and I’m excited to continue growing with my fantastic team.
What is the work environment like at Runshaw?
The IT Services Team at Runshaw is truly special. Everyone in the department has supported me throughout my time here, and I’ve always felt like I’m part of a team that trusts and relies on each other. Given the high volume of requests we handle every day, having a strong, supportive team is essential. I’m lucky to work with people who not only help me reach my full potential but also make the work environment enjoyable.
What do you love most about working at Runshaw College??
I’ve been on both sides of the experience at Runshaw – I was once a student here, and now I’m part of the team. My time as a student was the best time in my education, and I wanted to make sure current students have the same positive experience. It’s clear that every staff member at Runshaw shares this goal – to ensure every student feels supported and has an enriching learning experience.
What would you say to someone considering applying for a role at Runshaw?
The staff at Runshaw College are what truly make this place special. Everyone works towards the collective goal of student success, and there’s a strong sense of community among us. Also, the campus itself is beautiful – it’s a place you look forward to coming to every day.
