Success for Runshaw’s Rugby Union Academy!
A warm Wednesday afternoon at Runshaw College saw the college’s Rugby Union Academy take to the field for the Lancashire Schools final against Holy Cross College from Bury.
The game started shakily for Runshaw, who handed the opposition easy possession and gave away far too many penalties. As a result of this, the team found themselves 14-0 down at halftime. After the break, Runshaw were still a little unsettled and a series of slick handling moves saw Holy Cross score in the corner. Runshaw 0-19 Holy Cross. Head coach Jim McKeown had belief in his young squad and only made one change at this point. A Year Two student off and a Year One student on. With twenty five minutes remaining of the game there were spaces starting to appear in Holy Cross’s defence. Runshaw started to come together nicely and were looking very strong and eager for success. One converted try scored, 7-19, then two converted tries scored 14-19 with five minutes left. A brilliant run by the captain down the field set the standard. Lots of supporting players were available for him to continue their attack. Ben Ivory collected a fantastic pass from Edward Slater to score under the posts. This try was converted. With the score at 21-19 and two minutes remaining, Runshaw closed the game out professionally. Final score Runshaw 21-19 Holy Cross College.
