Students from A Level Philosophy, RS and across the college recently travelled to the University of St. Andrews to take part in the national final of the Ethics Cup 2025.
The Ethics Cup is a national philosophical presenting and discussion competition. Our students qualified for this event having won their Manchester regional competition in December. The final is a very prestigious event with some of the highest-ranking schools in the country competing and judged by academics, influential people at the university – including the principal – and beyond.

This was their first time entering the competition this year and our students spent months preparing. A special mention should also go to Tom, who came back to college after finishing his final exams to compete. As expected, the standard of the competition was extremely high but our students did themselves proud, giving two very strong presentations and doing a fantastic job of commentating on the presentations of others and answering the judges’ questions. They won their first match against Merchant Taylors’ School, but were narrowly defeated by Winstanley College in the second round. The team narrowly missed out on the semi-finals by only 0.5 of a vote, despite being the highest scoring team in the group.
Our students made strong links with the team from Winstanley and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience, even taking time out to play table tennis against the boys from Eton! They honed their skills of presenting, critical thinking and teamwork, and every member of the team played a vital role and should be very proud of their achievements.
