This week we were proud to take part in UK Parliament Week, giving our learners the opportunity to explore democracy, political participation, and the importance of having their voices heard.
We were delighted to welcome Davinia Thomson from Lancashire Citizens, who led a thought-provoking and energetic debate on what democracy means to our learners today. Students explored themes such as active citizenship, representation, and whether the voting age should be lowered to 16. The session sparked meaningful conversation and encouraged learners to reflect on their role in shaping the society they live in.
Later in the week, we hosted a special Student Union meeting attended by three distinguished guests: Paul Foster – Labour MP for South Ribble, Aniela Bylinski – Deputy Leader of South Ribble Council, and Matthew Tomlinson – Leader of South Ribble Council, pictured below.

Our guests joined the SU to announce the winners of the Student President and Vice President Elections, recognising the hard work and dedication of our student leaders. Following the announcement, they participated in a lively and insightful ‘Question Time’ session with around 100 learners, who were eager to engage on current political issues. Discussions covered a wide range of topics affecting young people, including recent government proposals set out in the newly released White Paper, local priorities, and the importance of youth engagement in public life. We would like to thank our guests for coming to Runshaw during what has been a busy week in politics!
