A small but important sub-group of Law Academy is Moot Club, where students perfect their critical thinking and advocacy skills by presenting arguments on Court of Appeal decisions.
We were therefore delighted to be invited to Edge Hill’s Law Society Debate Competition last week, to present our case on Euthanasia in front of Fiona Davies, Lecturer in the School of Law and Criminal Justice. Fiona gave our students very useful feedback on their arguments, research and advocacy skills and allowed them the opportunity to experience the beautiful old oak court furniture in the courtroom, which now provides a new home and lease of life for the now closed Southport Magistrates’ Court.

The event also included an introduction to studying Law at university, and an opportunity to hear from current students and staff about the courses, the School of Law and Criminal Justice and the student experience. We’d like to thank Edge Hill and all the staff and students who gave us such a great day, and to Jo and Zenab for facilitating the trip.

As well as mooting, our vibrant Law Academy provides a unique opportunity to practice advanced legal skills such as mock trialling and mentoring. Experience of these advanced skills definitely enhances a student’s university application, CV and employability, leading to Runshaw’s fantastic record of students studying Law at all prestigious universities including Oxbridge. We work closely with practicing barristers to plan and prepare cases and ultimately compete in the national finals against the best teams from across the UK. Find out more below.
