Melting but still marvellous!
Last Thursday, the School of Visual Arts hosted their ‘End of Year Show’, and, despite the heat wave, was once again a spectacle to behold!
With work exhibited from A Level 3D Design, Fine Art, Graphics, Photography and Textiles, Level 2 & 3 UAL Art & Design, Level 3 UAL Graphic Design, and UAL FAD, the entire school had been converted into gallery spaces to enable 400 students to exhibit their work. Friends, families, alumni and even previous school teachers came to celebrate the amazing work on display.
Every year the exhibition is different and this truly reflects how teachers support their students in developing their personal interests, use of media and concepts as they start their journey to become young, creative artists, designers and makers. There were strong themes around sustainability this year, from print and textiles work using plants to dye fabric and print surface pattern designs, to work incorporating recycled materials, including work constructed from repurposed expedition tents from Mt Everest. Photography work combined dark, atmospheric aesthetics with visual storytelling to raise the awareness of communication and sign language, whilst another project explored the relationship between Japanese horror and feminism, presented through a carefully curated virtual gallery.
Graphic Design work was highly professional, with several branding projects that would not look out of place within a commercial design agency. There was also some beautiful illustration work for gaming and children’s books, where students had confidently developed their own personal style. Architectural projects in 3D Design drew inspiration from natural forms such as honeycomb structures, while others referenced the Bridgewater, creating work that was both technically precise and environmentally grounded.
Congratulations to our ‘Best in Show’ winners; Eva Leggett in Level 2 Art & Design, who created beautiful illustrations of Sea Life before animating them into kaleidoscopic imagery, and John Sasaki in A Level Fine Art, who created an emotionally powerful stop motion animation of a deer hunt through charcoal drawings. We’d also like to say thank you to the teaching and technician teams for the guidance, encouragement and expertise they provide to all students.
