We are thrilled to share some incredible news from our Economics department as our students celebrate a double victory at Lancaster University’s Next-Gen Competition!
Last term, two teams from our Economics department headed to Lancaster University’s Management School (LUMS) to take part in the prestigious Next-Gen Entrepreneurs Challenge, a competition designed to uncover the next generation of entrepreneurial talent. The challenge saw 27 top teams from across the North West compete to develop a business plan that tackles Sustainable Development Goals, all under the scrutiny of Lancaster’s Entrepreneurs in Residence.

Teams were tasked with creating and delivering a 5–10 minute business pitch that demonstrated innovation, impact and commercial viability. The atmosphere on the day was electric, the standard was sky-high, and the ideas on show were nothing short of inspirational.
Runshaw College entered two powerhouse teams: SafeStep – proposing a revolutionary self-defence initiative for high school students, and Giving Link – creating an innovative way to integrate charitable giving with online shopping. After months of research, teamwork and dedication, we are delighted to announce that Runshaw’s teams won both awards.

SafeStep beat last year’s champions Merchant Taylors’ School and many other outstanding colleges to win the Overall Competition. Giving Link took home the People’s Choice Award, voted for by fellow teams, judges, lecturers, and visitors – a true reflection of how much they impressed on the day. For one college to take both awards in such a competitive field is simply phenomenal. This is a massive achievement for our students and a proud moment for our Economics department, led by Theo Martins, Zaeem Zaman, and Gordon Aitken. We are beyond proud of our students – to see them go from an idea on paper to flawless presentations, to think on their feet during intense questioning, and hold their own against the very best is nothing short of inspirational. A huge congratulations to all involved – you’ve made Runshaw proud!

Lancaster University also recently invited our A Level Religious Studies and Philosophy students to attend lectures on ‘Religion and Violence’ and ‘Women in Ancient Philosophy and Religion’. Students explored the campus and had a Q&A session with current academics and undergraduate students. The visit provided students with a valuable taste of what university life might be like, helping students to decide about their next steps in preparation for undergraduate study.
Students studying A Level Economics can also join our Economics Academy and discover our links with top universities including the world-ranked Lancaster University Management School, providing tailored study visits for Runshaw students. We strongly encourage students to enter these national competitions – more information can be found below.
