    At Runshaw, our Level 3 Cyber Security and Computing course gives learners a strong foundation in all aspects of this exciting and vital sector. Whether you aim to progress to university, move into employment, or continue training through an apprenticeship, this course provides the knowledge and skills you need, while also allowing you to specialise in areas that match your interests and career goals. Throughout your studies, you’ll explore a variety of units carefully chosen to reflect current industry trends and demands. Success in this course requires effective communication skills, creativity, and dedication, but above all, a passion for the subject.

    The course comprises 3 strands – computing, application development and cyber security and networking, giving you the skills and knowledge needed for modern digital careers within local, regional and national priority sectors.

    OCR AAQ in Cyber Security –

    • Fundamentals of Cyner Security
    • Preventing Cyber Attacks
    • Fundamentals of Networks
    • Digital Forensic Investigation
    • Penetration Testing and Incident Response

    Pearson AAQ in Computing

    • Programming Fundamentals
    • Computer Network Security and Encryption
    • Human-Computer Interaction
    • Practical Programming

    Learning is hands‑on and applied, bring theory to real‑world scenarios to prepare you for progression to university, apprenticeships or employment in the digital sector. You will complete a work-placement within a related employer setting, to apply to be part of the MOD Cyber Bursary Programme, engage in employer visits, guest speaking sessions and dedicated career/ employability-based activities.

  • Entry Requirements

    For our Level 3 Advanced Vocational courses our entry requirements are a minimum of 5x GCSEs at Grade 4, Maths or English Language/Literature at Grade 4 and Grade 3 in the other subjects.

    Please note, some courses and subjects will have additional specific entry requirements or require DBS clearance to undertake placements. Information about this can be found in our course leaflet (available to download above), the Apply Portal, and on your offer letter which you will receive after your interview.

    To join this course, students are normally expected to have:
    • At least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths and/or English
    • A strong interest in computing, digital technology or cyber security

  • How will I be assessed?

    Over this 2-year programme, you will complete a range of assessments that are designed to reflect how computing, application development and cyber skills are used in the real world.

    You will be assessed through a combination of:

    • Coursework projects
    • Externally set and assessed exams (3 per year)
    • Practical assignments
  • Progression Pathway

    This qualification is recognised for progression to a wide range of next steps, including:

     

    Higher education

    • Computing, Cyber Security or Computer Science degrees
    • Digital and technology‑related foundation degrees

     

    Apprenticeships

    • Software development
    • Cyber security
    • IT support and networking

     

    Employment

    • A variety of roles within the digital and technology sector

    The course also provides excellent preparation for more specialist digital routes, including T Levels and higher‑level technical qualifications.
