Aspiring Veterinary students visit Lancashire Farm Education Centre
Our students aspiring to study veterinary medicine recently visited the Lancashire Farm Education Centre to gain valuable insight into the management and operation of a modern dairy farm.
Our students were given a tour of the farm and learned about the advanced robotic milking systems used on site. They explored how technology is integrated into dairy farming, including the extensive data collected for each cow during milking. This included monitoring progesterone levels to assess pregnancy, alongside other health and productivity indicators that support animal welfare and herd management. Student later took part in a discussion on artificial insemination and the importance of genetics within the dairy industry, learning how the genetic traits of both bulls and cows are carefully monitored and selected to achieve the highest standards in health, productivity, and efficiency.
The visit also included a walk around the surrounding fields, where students explored the significance of land management and its role in supporting sustainable farming practices and animal care. The day concluded with a discussion of potential projects that our students will undertake in the coming weeks, allowing them to further develop their understanding of agriculture and veterinary science.
The experience provided students with an excellent opportunity to see the practical application of science and technology within modern farming and offered valuable insight into careers within veterinary medicine and animal management.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Lancashire Farm Education Centre for such an informative and engaging visit. Click below to find out about our Science courses, STEM subjects and academies.
